In Praise of AP Calculus

To the Editor:

In "Advancing Beyond AP Courses" (Admissions & Student Aid, May 2), Bruce G. Hammond bemoans AP courses' "coverage of large bodies of facts and concepts that students must retain long enough to take a three-hour exam." He goes on to say, "Modern neuroscience has shown that … the deepest knowledge results when students have significant control of the learning process."

I don't believe it, at least as far as it pertains to AP calculus and high-school math
