In Pointed Letter to Congress, Education Secretary Reiterates President's Veto Threat
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings sent a letter to Congress this month reiterating President Bush's threat to veto a bill that would slash lender subsidies and use the savings to drastically increase student aid.
The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed competing versions of the measure, known as a budget reconciliation bill, earlier this summer. Conferees from the two chambers have been meeting over the last few weeks to craft a compromise bill.
