In For-Profit Higher Education, Buying Binge Heats Up

Two large for-profit education companies have been on acquisition binges in recent weeks, escalating the competition for expansion among the sector's leading companies.

Education Management Corporation announced in June that it would pay $112.5-million in cash to buy a system of 18 junior colleges with locations in eight states and a total enrollment of 5,800 students. It was the company's third purchase of smaller competitors since April.
