Efforts to recruit more students and faculty members from minority groups will be a factor in pay decisions for top administrators, the University of Colorado System’s president, Hank Brown, said on Friday. He added that he expects the university’s regents to evaluate him by the same standard, The Rocky Mountain News reported.
While he set no numerical targets for campus leaders to meet, the president said he expected them “to show measurable progress.”
Mr. Brown spoke at a meeting of a commission he appointed last year to make recommendations for improving diversity at the flagship campus, in Boulder. University officials have objected to one of the commission’s recommendations, for making admissions requirements at Boulder more flexible, according to the Associated Press.
The university already uses some flexibility in admitting a percentage of its students from among applicants who score lower than an index figure based on high-school grades, class rank, and standardized-test results. Officials said it would be better to expand the applicant pool than to increase the number of students admitted through alternative criteria.
