Immigration Rallies Draw Support but Little Disruption on Campus

A fresh wave of rallies across the country in support of immigrant rights drew students and other attendees from colleges today, but there appeared to be little of the disruption to campus life that a national organization feared last week. In a message to its members, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources urged colleges to lay plans to deal with a national call for immigrants and their supporters to walk off their jobs and boycott businesses on Monday, in protest of legislation in Congress that would deport or criminalize illegal immigrants (The Chronicle, April 27).

But aside from a few campus offices closed, an extensive survey by The Chronicle found little evidence of the campus disorder that the association’s guidance was intended to allay. Students and others took part in rallies at Stanford University, Valparaiso University, and Humboldt State University, among other places. The protests followed by three weeks another round of demonstrations (The Chronicle, April 10) against legislation in Congress that would criminalize illegal immigrants.
