Illinois Board Backs Plan to Fight Phony Degrees

The Illinois Board of Higher Education has voted unanimously for a bill to crack down on online trafficking in phony college degrees.

The proposed legislation would make it a Class A misdemeanor to use a fake diploma, transcript, or other document from a legitimate college in the state to secure a job or promotion. Offenders could face a year in prison and a $2,500 fine.

The bill is expected to come before the Illinois legislature for a vote by May, said Don Sevener, a spokesman
