Idea Bank: Endowed Teaching Professors

"Publish or perish" has long been the recognized road to promotion and tenure in higher education. But today many colleges have rediscovered that the quality of teaching is intrinsic to their missions and crucial to attracting and retaining students, particularly undergraduates.

Bentley University, in Waltham, Mass., has created a program that develops faculty members as teachers and provides a fund-raising opportunity for colleges that wish to reinforce their commitment to teaching.
