IRS Offers 6-Month Filing Extension to Those Affected by Killings

The Internal Revenue Service said this morning that people affected by the Virginia Tech tragedy could take up to six extra months to file their 2006 tax returns, which were due on Tuesday.

“Taxes are the last thing the Virginia Tech family should be worried about at this time,” said Mark W. Everson, the IRS commissioner. The agency said the offer had been extended to “the victims, their families, emergency responders, and university students and employees.”
