Hurricane Fears Will Delay Academic Year at Dillard U.

Dillard University announced today it would delay the start of its fall semester by month. According to a news release, classes will begin in late September instead of mid-August, in order to “minimize the need to evacuate the campus” during the peak of the hurricane season. Dillard, which suffered some $400-million in damage from the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina last year, reopened in January, in a local hotel (The Chronicle, January 11, January 12, and January 13). This past spring, Dillard was among the New Orleans colleges to report a drop in the size of the freshman classes they expected to enroll this fall (The Chronicle, May 22). When it reopens, however, Dillard expects to do so on its own campus.
