Seven janitors who are among those who walked off their jobs at the University of Miami more than a month ago entered the sixth day of a hunger strike today, according to a news release issued by the Service Employees International Union, which has been trying to win recognition of a janitors’ union at Miami (The Chronicle, March 3). The janitors are employed by the Unicco Service Company, to which the university has outsourced the work of cleaning its buildings and grounds.
Another campus with an unhappy and outsourced janitorial staff is Carnegie Mellon University. According to an article in today’s Tartan, a student newspaper, the campus draws high ratings for cleanliness but low grades from janitors for low pay and poor benefits.
