One of the largest sources of private funds for research, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, named 56 new investigators today. The biomedical scientists will share $600-million to cover their salaries, benefits, research funds, and other expenses.
The researchers, who work at 31 American institutions, represent the largest new class of Hughes investigators since 1997, when 70 were named. They will be Hughes investigators for five years, with the opportunity to renew their status. —Lila Guterman
