How to Make Community Colleges the First Leg of a Journey
The American community college has the potential to be a powerful point of launch for baccalaureate study. Last year alone, community colleges accounted for 45 percent of all first-time freshmen enrolled in higher education. About half of that number had the goal of attaining a bachelor's degree. Over the years, research has consistently shown that community-college students, when they transfer, perform as well as students who initially enroll in four-year institutions.
