How to Give 'Strivers' Credit in Admissions Without Using Illegal Racial Preferences

To the Editor:

Thanks for mentioning my paper in your perceptive September 17 article "More Points for 'Strivers': the New Affirmative Action?"

In that article, you state that "[t]he proposed systems would be helpful in preserving racial diversity only when race is included as a factor, however. And in that case, they might not withstand legal scrutiny." This conclusion, while perfectly understandable, is not necessarily correct.
