"There isn't one specific career path" for a public-health major, says Sarah D. Ali, a junior at the U. of South Carolina.

In the spring of 2007, the leaders of the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health started to talk about offering bachelor's-level degrees. Less than a year later, the school won approval from state officials to begin B.A. and B.S. programs in public health. The first students entered in the fall of 2008, and the new programs have met their enrollment targets.
