How New Is the 'New Western History'?

The March 3 issue of The Chronicle features Patricia Nelson Limerick writing about her favorite subject -- Patricia Nelson Limerick ("Layer Upon Layer of Memory in the American West," Opinion). In her newfound role as a public intellectual, Limerick reaches out to all us college professors and tells us about her rise to fame and martyrdom as the progenitor of the "New Western History."
