House and Senate Negotiators Shape a Bill to Increase NIH Funds
But threat looms of an across-the-board cut that could hurt student aid and research
Negotiators from the House of Representatives and the Senate last week were completing work on a bill that would increase the budget of the National Institutes of Health by $2.3-billion, to $17.9-billion, and raise the maximum Pell Grant by $175, to $3,300, for fiscal 2000.
