Washington — The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill on Wednesday to clarify who qualifies for protection under the Americans With Disabilities Act, on campuses and elsewhere.
By a vote of 402 to 17, the House passed, with no amendments, a bill that its education committee approved last week. The bill maintains the existing definition that a disability must “substantially limit” a “major life activity” to be considered for coverage under the law. An earlier bill, opposed by college officials, had defined a disability as any “physical or mental impairment.”
The Senate is expected to pass a bipartisan bill similar to the House’s, HR 3195, The New York Times reported. Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat from Iowa, told the Times that the Senate would act “in the near future.” —Sara Lipka
