Kevin Cramer knew as soon as he arrived at the "Symposium on the Psychological Interpretation of War" that it would be no ordinary academic conference.
In November Mr. Cramer, an assistant professor of history at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, saw an online announcement for the interdisciplinary conference, which was sponsored by the Library of Social Science, an independent research organization in New York.
Mr. Cramer paid the $150 registration fee and flew
