House Panel Backs 13% Rise for NIH and a $250 Increase in Size of Pell Grants
A House of Representatives Appropriations subcommittee approved a bill last week that would increase the budget of the National Institutes of Health by 13 percent, to more than $23-billion in the 2002 fiscal year, and raise the maximum Pell Grant by $250, to $4,000.
The bill was the product of close negotiations between Republicans and Democrats on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, as well as with the White House.
