House Lawmakers Vow to Get More Money for the NSF Than Bush Proposed
Lawmakers from both parties criticized President Bush's budget proposal for the National Science Foundation at an appropriations hearing in the House of Representatives last week.
The president has proposed spending $4.47-billion on the science foundation in the 2002 fiscal year, an increase of only 1 percent. Republicans and Democrats alike said they would work to win more money for the agency, which is the second-leading source of federal funds for university research.
