The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a spending bill for the National Science Foundation that endorsed President Bush’s request to increase the agency’s budget by 8 percent in the 2007 fiscal year, which begins on October 1. The chamber approved the budgeting contained in a measure that passed the House Appropriations Committee two weeks ago (The Chronicle, June 15). The additional funds are part of Mr. Bush’s American Competitiveness Initiative, a plan to improve the quality of American science education and research.
