House Approves Agencies' Budgets

The Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives has endorsed roughly 5-percent increases in spending on defense and energy research in 2005, and the full chamber has approved nearly 10-percent increases for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Spending on defense research would increase by $313-million, to $6.14-billion, in the 2005 fiscal year under legislation approved by the committee last week. That total includes
