Honors Colleges and the Mediocrity of Education at Public Universities

Murray Sperber is right on target ("End the Mediocrity of Our Public Universities," The Review, October 20). The world, not just the United States, needs much better education for the general population.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains a list of the fastest-growing occupations, all of which require intense study and mastery of a range of skills. Fifty years ago, a high percentage of jobs involved routine tasks such as working on assembly lines. Today,
