High-Profile Dean of Admissions at MIT Quits Over Spurious Credentials

Marilee Jones, dean of admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a nationally known figure in admissions circles, resigned today after admitting that she had lied on her résumé about her academic credentials. According to The Boston Globe, Ms. Jones, who had been at MIT for 28 years, claimed to hold degrees from Albany Medical College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Union College, in New York, but did not have any of them. In a written statement, Ms. Jones apologized for the deception and said she “did not have the courage to correct my résumé” as she rose through the ranks at MIT. Ms. Jones’s credentials came under scrutiny after an anonymous caller to another MIT dean questioned her record. —Andrew Mytelka
