Head of United Negro College Fund to Retire

William H. Gray III, president and chief executive officer of the United Negro College Fund since 1991, announced this month that he would retire in March.

Mr. Gray, 62, came to the fund from the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served a Pennsylvania district for 13 years and, as a Democrat, ended up as majority whip. The connections that he made during his years in Congress paid off for the fund, which supports 39 private, historically black colleges. About 70 percent of the
