Head of Rice U.'s Anthropology Department Moves to Irvine; U. of Missouri at Kansas City Selects a Leader; Washington and Lee's President Heads to U. of Notre Dame as Provost

GOING POSTMODERN: George E. Marcus admits that some people think he is crazy to leave Rice University, where he headed the anthropology department for 25 years and led a revolution within his discipline. Despite having had "a well-oiled program" there, he says, it was time for a revolution of a more personal nature.

Mr. Marcus, 58, who spent the last year as a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, is staying in California to
