Head of Cancer Institute Announces Resignation

Richard D. Klausner resigned last month as director of the National Cancer Institute to lead a new science foundation set up by Steve Case, chairman of AOL Time Warner. Researchers praised Dr. Klausner for having provided strong leadership at the National Institutes of Health during a period of substantial growth.

The institute's budget, $3.757-billion this year, is the largest of any of the NIH's 27 institutes and centers. The NIH as a whole is the largest federal source of funds for
