Harvard's Ernst Mayr, a Pioneer in Evolutionary Biology, Dies at 100
Ernst Mayr, widely considered the father of modern evolutionary biology, died on February 3 after a short illness. Dr. Mayr, a professor emeritus of zoology at Harvard University, was 100 years old.
Dr. Mayr played a key role in the 1930s and 40s in uniting evolutionary biology with genetics to provide the so-called modern synthesis. He remained active in biology until just before his death.
