REBOUND? With Lawrence H. Summers out of the picture, Harvard University's department of African and African-American studies is trying to lure back some professors who left during the former president's stormy tenure.

The department was rebuffed in November, when it asked Cornel West if he wanted to return. Mr. West moved to Princeton University in 2002 after a highly publicized dispute with Mr. Summers over the legitimacy of the professor's scholarship. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham,
