Harvard to Create Endowed Chair in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies

Harvard to Create Endowed Chair in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies

Harvard University plans to announce on Thursday the creation of a new visiting professorship in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies, The New York Times reported this morning. The university believes it will be the first endowed chair in the field, but the Associated Press reported that the University of Louisville has a professorship of race, class, gender, and sexuality studies. The Harvard post will be named in memory of a former Harvard scholar, F.O. Matthiessen, who committed suicide in 1950 after the death of his partner. The new endowment would bring a different scholar to the university every semester. —Marc Beja
