Harvard Report on Curricular Reforms Dumps 'Faith' for 'Belief'

“Reason and Faith” are out. “Culture and Belief” are in.

The final report of a committee set up to examine Harvard University’s undergraduate curriculum was released today. It recommends dividing general requirements into eight subject areas, including “The United States in the World” and “Empirical Reasoning.”

One of the subject areas is dubbed “Culture and Belief.” In an earlier draft of the report, the area was called “Reason and Faith,” but that name elicited criticism from some who felt that it gave religion too much prominence. In December the committee sent a letter to faculty members saying that the name would be dropped.

Whether the new name will be more palatable to Harvard professors remains to be seen. The final report, which in other respects does not differ markedly from the earlier draft, is scheduled to be discussed next Tuesday at a faculty meeting.
