Hamilton College has made permanent its five-year experimental policy under which students could choose which standardized tests to submit as part of their applications for admission to the New York college, according to a Hamilton news release. The decision, which Hamilton said was unrelated to the SAT-scoring fiasco that was disclosed this week (The Chronicle, March 9), makes the college one of a growing number to adopt an SAT-optional policy. The practice received a major boost in 2004, when Bates College said a 20-year experiment with an SAT-optional policy had resulted in better applicants (The Chronicle, October 15, 2004).
