The gulf in giving to presidential candidates from academics has widened over the past month, with college administrators, professors, and other educators now having donated nearly 12 times as much to Barack Obama as they have to John McCain, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group.
College employees have contributed about $19.3-million to Mr. Obama, according to the group’s analysis of data released by the Federal Election Commission on October 27. That compares with the $1.6-million they have given to Mr. McCain. As of the end of September, educators had given Mr. Obama eight times as much as they had given to Mr. McCain.
The gap in giving by academics is the widest in any election since the 1992 contest, when the center started monitoring donations to presidential candidates.
