Even in their most frustrated moments, graduate students usually don't contemplate killing their thesis advisers. But with years of work invested in a dissertation, and academic careers on the line, the relationship between graduate students and the professors who sit in judgment is fraught with tension.

The murder of three professors by a master's student at San Diego State University last month shocked many graduate students and professors on campuses around the country. But it also
