Grading a Report Card on American Colleges
To the Editor:
In "Report Card on Colleges Finds U.S. Is Slipping" (The Chronicle, September 15), using completion rates to compare institutions across nations does not give an accurate picture. Because of the strength of American regional accrediting bodies, comparing completion rates across states for similar institutions would be legitimate. But when comparing nation to nation, one has to look not at completion rates but at the quality of education in the countries in question and
