Hank Brown, president of the University of Colorado System, has dealt with the controversy over the outspoken professor Ward Churchill, a scandal-plagued football program, and continuing concerns about alcohol abuse and racial diversity on the campus since taking office a year ago (The Chronicle, November 11, 2005).
Now he is taking on another challenge—grade inflation. The Denver Post reports that Mr. Brown will ask the system’s Board of Regents to add graduates’ class ranking to their transcripts. Disclosing students’ ranks will combat grade inflation and give employers a better idea of students’ academic achievements, Mr. Brown said.
It is unclear exactly how the university would calculate class rank, but the Rocky Mountain News notes that class rank was included on transcripts when Mr. Brown graduated from the university’s Boulder campus, in 1961. He was in the top fifth of his class.
