GO DEFENSE: The U.S. Senate has approved an amendment that would provide an additional $40-million for defense-related research and scholarships in the 2006 fiscal year. The measure would double spending on the fledgling Smart National Defense Education Program, to $20-million, and would increase the budget for university research by $30-million.
