New England and upstate New York are thick with colleges — a few big state universities, many more small private institutions. The Empire State even has a highway sign to identify them, featuring the silhouette of a student in a mortarboard. And in every small town along the Hudson River Valley, there seems to be another one of those signs pointing the way to yet another college.
