Getting a Degree Without Going to Class: Distance Learning and Competency Exams

To the Editor:

At the risk of sounding like some antitechnology Luddite (which I am not), I must state emphatically that on-line, virtual learning most definitely poses a threat to the future of education in this country ("A Virtual Student Teaches Himself," May 7).

The idea that our citizenry should have open and unencumbered access to education is of course a good one. This is especially the case in
