Many college administrators and others associated with the assessment of academic success once again owe Alexander W. Astin a measure of gratitude for his clarity of thinking and his statistics ("To Use Graduation Rates to Measure Excellence, You Have to Do Your Homework," The Chronicle Review, October 22). That he and his colleagues ventured to formulate a multifaceted predictor of college completion, did a study to match prediction to graduation-rate outcome, and now
