Fairleigh Dickinson University's admitted-student days were supposed to give accepted students and their families a feel for what life would be like if they enrolled. The university's two New Jersey campuses each set aside a day in April for them to do things like take tours and meet with faculty members.

But just a few years ago, many families who came to the events were missing out. Instead of getting to know the university, with its 8,600 undergraduates, they were standing in line
