The results of the second and final round of the German government’s Excellence Initiative were announced today, with six universities winning tens of millions of dollars in additional annual financing as well as informal designation as “elite” institutions. The six institutions — Berlin’s Free University, the Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University in Aachen, and the Universities of Freiburg, Göttingen, Heidelberg, and Konstanz — join two universities in Munich and the University of Karlsruhe, which were singled out during last year’s first round of results. The program is intended to foster research at German universities and the nine universities that have been awarded “elite” status will benefit from a total of 1.9 billion euros, or about $2.7-billion, in additional financing over the next five years. —Aisha Labi
