Gay-Rights Activists Urge Ryerson U. to Rescind Honorary Doctorate to Ethicist

Ryerson University, in Toronto, has refused to withdraw an honorary doctorate to an internationally respected medical and legal ethicist, despite vociferous demands from gay-rights supporters.

The academic in question, Margaret Somerville, supports gay civil unions, but also holds that a mother and a father are the best people to raise children, not two people of the same sex. Ms. Somerville is the founding director of the Centre for Medicine, Ethics, and Law at McGill
