Gallaudet U. Protests Resume Over Presidential Pick

Student protests resumed on Wednesday at Gallaudet University, over the selection of Jane K. Fernandes as the next president of the university for the deaf.

Critics have protested the choice for a variety of reasons, including her demeanor, her ethnicity, her facility with American Sign Language, the process that selected her, and the university board’s relations with the campus (The Chronicle, May 1 and May 3). The criticism extended from alumni to students to members of the faculty, which voted no confidence in Ms. Fernandes (The Chronicle, May 9). The controversy led to threats against the board’s president, who later resigned (The Chronicle, May 10).

The protesting students, who numbered in the “dozens,” according to today’s Washington Post, want Ms. Fernandes to resign, even though she has not yet fornally taken office, and the Gallaudet board to reopen the search. A Gallaudet spokeswoman said neither of those things was going to happen.
