Gallaudet U. Is Placed on Probation

The president of Gallaudet University announced today that the institution had been placed on probation by its accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

“We wanted to avoid that label,” President Robert R. Davila said at a news conference reported in The Washington Post. “But we may look back on all this … as a blessing in disguise. It gives us an opportunity to change, and change is good.”

Last fall students shut down the university with a series of hunger strikes and demonstrations to protest the appointment of Jane K. Fernandes as president, a move that Gallaudet’s Board of Trustees subsequently reversed. —Don Troop
