The interim head of Gallaudet University’s Board of Trustees has resigned from the board because the controversy surrounding its choice of a new president has resulted in what she described as “numerous aggressive threats,” according to an article in today’s Washington Post. The former trustee, Celia May Baldwin, did not explain the nature of the threats.
Meanwhile, student protesters remained camped out at the university for the deaf, and both the outgoing and incoming presidents reiterated on Tuesday that the board’s choice of a new leader was final. The university’s faculty voted to approve measures on Monday that expressed no confidence in the new president (The Chronicle, May 9). The protests broke out immediately after the board announced its choice (The Chronicle, May 1 and May 3).
A leader of the protests told the Post that he was sorry about Ms. Baldwin’s resignation and regretted the threats she received. “The threats are harming our cause,” he said. The board is scheduled to meet today and tomorrow on the controversy.
