GOP Lawmaker Urges Increase in Pell Grants

A top Republican lawmaker told a national student group in March exactly what it wanted to hear: that Congress should increase spending on the Pell Grant Program and GEAR UP, the group's top two legislative priorities.

Sen. James M. Jeffords, of Vermont, delivered that message in a speech at the annual meeting of the United States Student Association, which lobbies for college students.
