National Guard and Army Reserve troops who are honorably discharged are not eligible for the same education benefits as active-duty troops who leave the armed forces, even though many of them have completed similar service obligations in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an article in Sunday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The report confirms the difficulty that troops have had in getting their GI Bill benefits, as we reported last year (The Chronicle, May 13, 2005), and the concern that the federal program is inadequate to meet the educational needs of the average soldier. A consortium of 40 veterans groups is lobbying Congress to support the Total Force Montgomery GI Bill, a measure that would increase GI Bill benefits for guard and reserve soldiers.
