When top research universities need presidents, they go looking for someone like Robert N. Shelton.

A physicist by training, he has a résumé littered with top academic jobs: vice chancellor for research at the University of California at Davis; vice provost for research in the University of California system; executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and, since 2006, president of the University of Arizona.
