Friendship in the Internet Age

I want to thank William Deresiewicz ("Faux Friendship," The Chronicle Review, December 11, 2009) for crystallizing my recent thoughts about friendship and its place in contemporary society.

My recent nomadic life in pursuit of an education and a job in academia has reminded me of the value of friendship, so I have sought out old friends (and new ones) with the help of Facebook and the Internet. While I'm glad to have reconnected with a few old friends
